Moscow urged EU member states to provide details of a planned summit between the bloc and Russia. Russian President Vladimir Putin has regular contact with the heads of state and government of Germany and France but they have not touched on the issue. However, Russia is clear about the EU’s policy of resistance, restraint and commitment.
In fact, just a few days ago the EU decided on a new policy towards the Russian Federation. It had formulated as a tripartite policy of refusal, restrictions and commitments.
Russia have heard about the French and German proposals to hold the EU-Russia summit. We do not know more details about what it is? what is the agenda of the meeting? The other EU members agree so our colleagues have to explain what they mean and what they want?”, Russian Foreign Minister said.
Kremlin spokesman said in a separate statement that German Chancellor proposed a summit of EU leaders with Russian President to improve relations.
There may be a chronological connection to the summit of Putin and Biden in Geneva. Perhaps this is taken in Europe as a signal that it is now possible for them too to show something of their independence.
A lot of things are not clear here, before Russia can react specifically, it has to understand what is going to discuss.
Officials said there is currently not enough information to comment on the matter but let’s see what will actually happen.
