ECP Said Testing of EVMs by Third Party is Necessary

“Irresponsible media remarks” have been dismissed by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), which has stated that the institution is responsibly working on the implementation of i-voting and electronic voting machines (EVMs).

The spokeswoman stated in a statement that the ECP had received a briefing on December 23 from the relevant committees.

It went on to say that international norms could not be ignored when it came to tendering the EVMs, and that third-party testing was also required.

According to the spokesperson, false information is being disseminated through irresponsible media claims. According to the ECP, some people are unfamiliar with the technology, and the institution is prepared to offer them the necessary briefings on the subject.

The Election (second amendment) ordinance 2021 was promulgated by President Arif Alvi earlier in May, granting voting rights to overseas Pakistanis and authorizing the use of electronic voting machines (EVMs) throughout the election process.

Sections 94 (1) and 103 of the Election Act 2017 have been amended, according to the presidential ordinance.

The revisions will aid in guaranteeing that Pakistanis living abroad have the opportunity to vote in the upcoming general election.

Furthermore, the ECP would be required to purchase electronic voting machines (EVMs) prior to the general election as a result of revisions made to sections relevant to the use of biometric equipment for a pilot project in the next general election.
