Former US Cop Derek Chauvin sentenced for 22.5 years prison over Floyd’s murder

A Minnesota court sentenced Derek Chauvin to 22.5 years in prison on Friday. Officer had filmed kneeling on Floyd's neck despite repeatedly saying he couldn't breathe.

Derek Chauvin, former cop of Minneapolis Police Department had convicted in April of second-degree murder, third-degree murder death of George Floyd in custody. A video showed Chauvin kneeling on Floyd’s neck for more than 9 minutes. Officer had filmed kneeling on Floyd’s neck despite repeatedly saying he couldn’t breathe.

A Minnesota court sentenced Derek Chauvin to 22.5 years in prison on Friday. Judge Peter Cahill told the court that Chauvin will be in prison about 270 months which equivalent of 22.5 years. Chauvin is also require to register as a predator under state law. Moreover, Chauvin has prohibited from possessing any firearms, ammunition or explosives for the rest of his life.

The judge kept his brief statement in the courtroom instead of providing a more detailed analysis of the verdict in a 22-page memorandum.  The evidence clearly showed that Chauvin had abused Floyd by speaking at his request when he did a face lay reacting on the floor. This based on the abuse of your trust and authority and the extreme cruelty shown to George Floyd. Cop ignored calls from coworkers to put Floyd in a rest position.

The testimony of the victims has given by Floyd’s daughter, his niece and brothers. Following the development, Minnesota Attorney General told reporters that today’s sentencing is not justice.

Cahill had previously ruled that circumstances would pave the way for the presiding judge to double the 15-year sentence guidelines. It has widely speculated that he is unlikely to give this sentence because the former officer has not previously arrested.

What about the other three co-workers of Derek Chauvin?

Chauvin has convicted by a jury in Hennepin state in April. Chauvin had pleaded not guilty to all charges but remained in isolation for two months. Now he has sentenced for such a long term in prison.

Further, Judge decided to postpone the trial of officers until next year to avoid the publicity surrounding the chauvinist trial. The trial of other three officers Tou Thao, J. Alexander and Thomas Lane will take place in March 2022.
