Cases of a new variant of the Covid-19 virus were confirmed on Saturday in several European countries, including Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. They are all related to people who have come from Great Britain.
Japan, meanwhile, has announced it will ban all foreign newcomers from Monday after opening options to passengers from Britain.

The news comes at a time when another six million people in the east and southeast of England are in the Level 4 condition, the UK’s tightest Covid level, which was imposed on them on Boxing Day. Bans have also been imposed in Scotland and Northern Ireland. About 24 million people in the UK, over 40% of the population, are now living at Level 4 because of pressure for the entire country to fall into that category.

Researchers from the Independent Sage group are calling for all regions in the UK to be rated at Level 4, which means shops, hairdressers and insignificant places of recreation and entertainment should be closed. The countries that were betrayed were advised to apply for a national blockade of their own. Group 4 should include stricter travel restrictions, the group said, recommending the introduction of contingency plans to allow safe training in January and February.

This idea is supported by the teachers’ union, which is calling on the government to close schools as there is growing evidence that the new virus is highly contagious in children.
This statement is supported by Paul Hunter, Professor of Medicine at the University of East Anglia. “If this new option is behind the revival of this age group, that’s a big problem,” he said.
France announced this weekend that it had opened its first case of a new option – a French national who came to Tours from London a week ago, according to health officials.

In the UK, the NHS announced on Saturday that an additional 161 people who have tested positive for Covid-19 have died. The patients were between 44 and 100 years of age and all but eight had knowledge of the basic health condition. The figure shows the total number of deaths from Covid reported in UK hospitals at 48,311.
