The local government (LG) system implemented by the Sindh govt has been rejected by the PTI-led administration at the Centre, which claims that it does not empower people.
Asad Umar, Federal Minister for Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives told a gathering of Pakistan People’s Party (PTI) activists in Karachi that the PTI had filed a lawsuit against the local government system in a statement to the media.
Umar took a scathing stance against the Sindh government, particularly against the Sindh Local Government (Amendment) Bill 2021, which was recently passed.
“The Sindh Local Government Bill [Sindh Local Government Bill] does not grant any authority to the local governments of Karachi or any other city in the province. It has been proposed as a means of establishing a fictitious local government structure. Now is the moment to initiate a movement to protect the rights of the people of Karachi and the people of Sindh, which we strongly oppose “he explained.
Speaking of Islamabad, the former finance minister revealed that the mayor will be in charge of critical areas including health, education, transportation, tourism, water supply, and sewage departments in the city.
Umar recognized that the census had been a source of contention in Karachi for some time. Despite the fact that the city’s new population census will be finished by December 2022, he stated that the administration was hearing complaints about it since the people of Karachi were not receiving jobs as a result of the city’s outdated census.
It was said by him that the prime minister desired a census to be conducted every five years.
“In Karachi, a fair and transparent census would be held,” Umar stated. A further statement from the minister claimed that the project for the Green Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system would be completed in 10-12 days.
The PTI-led administration, Umar asserted, will fix Karachi’s transportation problems, and he stated that Prime Minister Imran Khan will officially inaugurate the project in Karachi in two weeks. “Prime Minister Imran Khan is coming [to Karachi] to address the transportation problems that the inhabitants of Karachi are experiencing,” Umar stated.
