Unlike traditional aircraft, drones are unmanned vehicles that may be controlled from a distance. However, there have some concepts suggested that manned drones may one day become a new type of personal transportation that we can look forward to in the near future. Cambodia appears to be on the cusp of achieving that vision of the future, as Cambodian students build a working manned drone.
In the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh, a group of students has build their own manned drone. And the drone is truly functional. To overcome the city’s notorious traffic, this drone, which has inspired by the need to clear congestion, can carry up to 60kg. And fly for up to 10 minutes, and reach a height of four meters. We realize that 10 minutes isn’t going to get you very far. But when you consider that this is the effort of kids who don’t have the resources of a large technology business, it’s very remarkable.
It appears that this drone was also a labour of love, as it took them around three years to reach to this point. During which time they spent as much as $20,000 in the process of development. Despite this, they are still far from finished, and the students believe that it will take another two years until it is totally ready and tested. It has also predicted that the project will cost up to $40,000 in total by the time it has completed.
In addition to reducing road congestion, the students believe that it might be use to battle fires. Where it could aid in the transportation of water and the carriage of hoses to higher floors in a more timely and effective manner.
