BBC World News prohibited from airing in China

  • China says probe found BBC World News China-related reports  “seriously violated” regulations.
  • BBC World News application to air for another year will not be accepted, says China.
  • The move comes a week after the UK media regulator revoked CGTN’s broadcast licence.

BBC World News has banned from broadcasting in China, the National Radio and Television Administration said on Thursday.

The developments come a week after British media regulators revoked Chinese state television broadcasting licenses.

In a Chinese New Year statement, the government said the investigation found that a BBC World News report relating to China “seriously violated” the rules. Also the fact that it had to be “true and fair” for China’s national interests which undermined and undermined national unity.

UK’s Raab says ban is unacceptable

“China’s decision to ban BBC World News in mainland China is an unacceptable curtailing of media freedom,” Raab said on Twitter.

“China has some of the most severe restrictions on media & internet freedoms across the globe, and this latest step will only damage China’s reputation in the eyes of the world.”
