Azam Swati slams ECP for a show-cause notice

Federal Minister for Railways Azam Khan Swati criticised the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for serving him with a show-cause notice during a press conference on Monday, and he questioned how many similar notices had been served to PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz and JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman.

In response, the ECP inquires, “Can you tell me how many notifications the ECP has given to Maryam Nawaz and Fazlur Rehman notifying them that it has sent a notice to me?” the ECP asks. When Swati addressed a news conference in Islamabad, she was accompanied by Dr Babar Awan, Advisor to the Prime Minister on Parliamentary Affairs, who highlighted the issue.

As previously reported by Geo News, the ECP had sent letters to Swati and Fawad Chaudhry, the Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting, last week after they had made complaints against the institution.

The minister for railways stated that Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja was “speaking the language of the Opposition, and the existing administration was having difficulty understanding him.”

According to the federal minister, the PTI-led government intends to establish the electoral commission as an autonomous institution, despite the fact that some aspects of the CEC’s appointment are still being kept “hidden.”
