‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ will be distributed in China

“20th Century Studios said Wednesday that “Avatar 2” would hit mainland Chinese theaters on December 16.

The studio announced on Weibo that “Avatar: The Way of Water” will be released in China on the same day as elsewhere.

It’s one of the few international films to enter the Chinese market in recent months, along with “Minions” and “Where the Crawdads Sing.”

Due to strict rules about broadcasting, it has always been hard for foreign movies to find release dates in mainland China. Many are barred due to content Chinese officials find unseemly.

Hollywood films have had trouble showing in China recently. “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” was also denied a China distribution this year.

China’s film companies are developing their own versions of the high-octane blockbusters made by Hollywood.

“Wolf Warrior” and “The Battle at Changjin Lake” are popular with Chinese fans who want to see more Chinese-centric films.

Since Chinese movie ticket sales surpassed U.S. sales in 2020, COVID-19 limitations have affected the Chinese movie sector. Cinemas across the country have been instructed to close or limit attendance.

As cases rise, residents in many places are avoiding movie theatres.
