Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan‘s incumbent party won the early election, according to the country’s election commission. Preliminary results from all 2008 polling stations gave civil contract party 54%. The Armenian opposition alliance came in second with 21% whereas the block alleges electoral fraud.
The vote took place after Armenia’s defeat in the war with Azerbaijan over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region. The region has recognized internationally as part of Azerbaijan. Last year Azerbaijan regained control of most of the mountainous region, which had lost to Armenia in 1988/94. Officially, 2,904 Azerbaijani soldiers lost their lives last year. About 4,000 soldiers have lost Armenia.
Mr. Pashinyan declared election victory and urged his supporters to gather in the main square of the capital Yerevan that evening. The Armenian people have mandated our country to run the country under a civil agreement. He already knew that he win by a landslide in the election and he will get a convincing majority in parliament.
Armenian PM came to power after a prominent popular revolution in 2018. Armenia has received praise from several countries for holding its first free and fair elections that year.
The attorney general said he had reported 319 violations and opened six criminal investigations. All of them have been linked to alleged bribery during the agitation. Hundreds of signals from polling stations indicating organized and premeditated forgery as main reason for the lack of trust.
A friend and ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, was previously accusing of holding presidential elections in favor of political allies. Moreover, The country has been in crisis since November when Pashinyan signed a truce with Azerbaijan to end war. He has also accused of leading a fatal crackdown on protesters in 2008.
