Apple Inc. is preparing an overhaul of the original Air Pods for this year and the second generation of Air Pods Pro for next year, according to those with knowledge of the matter. The report says the new Air Pods will have a new case and a shorter barrel at the bottom, while the Air Pods Pro will update the motion sensors that will likely be used to track fitness.
The update to Air Pods is not a big surprise as Apple hasn’t updated it since launching in March 2019. In particular, Bloomberg said the company originally planned to release new Air Pods Pro this year. But has changed their plans for unclear reasons.
The new base Air Pods will be the first product update from March 2019. This will add a new design that primarily reflects the Air Pods Pro. The headphones come with a new case and a shorter grip, each one pressed down from the bottom.
The Air Pods Pro, which will be available next year, will be the first changes to the product starting October 2019. This will include an updated motion sensor with an emphasis on fitness tracking.
Perhaps the most interesting part of this report is something that’s not going to happen any time soon the New Air Pods Max. According to Bloomberg, Apple has no immediate plans to release a new version of the company’s most expensive headphones.
Although they may come in new colors (AirPods Max is currently available in gray, silver, green, sky blue, and pink).
According to the report, Apple has only pursued demand for AirPods Max recently. Which means it is likely too early to consider further action.
As part of a broader home, audio and accessories strategy, Apple is also starting early development of the HomePod speaker. This is with an integrated display, as well as a device that will combine the functions of the HomePod, FaceTime camera, and Apple TV, Bloomberg News reports.
Competition for screen speakers is now widespread. Apple released the HomePod earbuds last year and rolled out a minor update for the Apple TV last month.

For the new AirPods Pro, Apple is also testing a smaller design that avoids the problem. This display will first show on the new Beats wireless headphones that will announce next month.
The new AirPods are the first update to Apple’s real wireless coverage in more than a year. Apple first launched AirPods Pro in late 2019, while the original AirPods haven’t updated since March 2019. In December, the company released its first AirPods headset, the AirPods Max.
