The National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), the government’s anti-coronavirus strategy for nearly two years, may close after a victorious war, said Dr Faisal Sultan.
Dr Sultan, the country’s de facto health minister, said the prime minister would formally close the NCOC by the end of the month, and that a monument would be created to commemorate Pakistan’s two-year victory over coronavirus.
The NCOC was formed one month after the first Covid-19 case in the country, on February 26, 2020, to implement the National Coordination Committee’s recommendations. Since then, Planning Minister Asad Umar has led the group.
On March 27, the NCOC will be two years old. Dr. Faisal Sultan told a private TV station that the NCOC’s functions would be moved to the National Institute of Health (NIH).
The epidemic hit five times in the country, killing about 30,000 individuals. The latest data reveals that the epidemic is progressively dispersing, with daily new cases around 500 and fatalities down to a single digit.
