A Russian village is blanketed in black snow

There are two locations of the world where snow falls in two contrasting colours, one white and the other black, and the first is in the Arctic and the second in the Antarctic.

A significant amount of snow has fallen in many communities in the Russian province of Magadan this winter. Siberian snowfall is similar in that it includes regular snowfall as well as black snowfall, but do you know why this occurs?

Russian water heating plants from the 1970s and 1980s, where incomplete combustion of organic materials produces enormous volumes of carbon particles, which then fall over the surrounding environment like snow, are still in operation. There’s also dark snow.

The children in this area appear to be enjoying themselves in the black snow in the same way that they do when there is a normal snowstorm.

Over the years, films and photographs have emerged that demonstrate that people have never been concerned by the unusually coloured snow that has fallen.
